Marnie Ponton – Athlete Profile
Marnie Ponton is a mother of two children and a proud Western Sydney resident, calling Glenbrook in the Lower Blue Mountains home. Just has she done in her running, Marnie has excelled in her professional life and works as a Nurse Practitioner, heading up the Emergency Team at Nepean Hospital.
Marnie has always loved running. As a junior and young adult, she achieved a lot, including representing Australia in Mountain Running and winning the Australian 3000m Steeplechase title. Now 33 and since having children and finishing off post-graduate studies, Marnie has again dedicated herself to running, a sport which she is seeking to ultimately reach the highest level in.
Versatility in running has always been a skill highly valued by Marnie, and under the guidance of her Coach Brendan Davies, Marnie has finished 4th (2016), 2nd (2017) and 3rd (2018) in Australia’s largest road race, the City2Surf. In 2017 she won the 45km trail race, the Six Foot Track Marathon in the Blue Mountains. She has taken out the 2017 NSW State Titles in the 10km Road Race and 5,000m on the track, and was 5th in the Australian 10,000m Championships. She has won and made the podium in a number of other domestic events.
In the last 12 months, Marnie’s focus has solely been on the road marathon and she debuted in her first competitive road marathon last year at the Gold Coast in 2h 40min. In March this year, Marnie will travel to Japan to take on the Nagoya 'Womens Only' marathon and is again looking to lower that time in another step towards working her way into the Australian team.
Marnie will participate in the Half Marathon event at Western Sydney, and this race will be a very important in the lead up to her second marathon for 2019, at the Gold Coast, where she will be attempting to run close to a 2:30 goal time.
Marnie is super excited to be a Race Ambassador and look out for her training tips leading into the big races at Western Sydney!
